Les dossiers 

Au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années, la question kurde est restée présente au Proche-Orient. Comme par le passé, elle a été entourée d'événements tragiques : insurrections armées, attentats, massacres, déplacements de population, exodes, assassinats de chefs politiques, destructions de villages... Elle a été marquée  également par des difficultés intérieures dues aux rivalités entre chefs et entre tribus ainsi qu'aux scissions et aux affrontements idéologiques.

Les Kurdes demeurent soumis à la domination de plusieurs États, qui contestent leur particularité ethnique et culturelle, leur revendication nationale et, a fortiori, leur avenir politique. Leur histoire récente est celle de leur lutte pour faire reconnaître ces droits. 

Le sort réservé aux Kurdes d'Irak, durant la Guerre du Golfe, a attiré l'attention du monde et entraîné l'intervention des pays occidentaux. La question kurde est revenue ainsi sur la scène internationale. Une résolution à ce sujet a été adoptée par le Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU et une autre par le Parlement européen. 

Certains auteurs considèrent cette reconnaissance internationale comme un signe d'espoir pour le peuple kurde et interprètent dans ce sens l'autorisation de la langue kurde en Turquie et le nouveau statut du Kurdistan d'Irak. 

D'autres, sceptiques, estiment que la situation des Kurdes est fragile et qu'elle s'est aggravée. Ils jugent le contexte actuel peu favorable à une évolution vers l'autonomie au sein des États ou vers l'indépendance.
